Mocis frugalis, commonly known as the sugarcane leaf-eating caterpillar, is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae. This pest is widely distributed across tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in Asia, Africa, and parts of Australia, causing substantial agricultural damage.

The primary hosts of this insect are monocotyledonous plants, especially members of the Poaceae family. Key crops affected include rice, maize, sorghum, sugarcane, and millet. Mocis frugalis also utilizes various wild grasses as alternative hosts, which supports its population density throughout the year.

The life cycle of the moth consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females lay eggs individually or in clusters on the leaves. Once hatched, the larvae undergo several instars, feeding voraciously on the foliage. Pupation typically occurs within folded leaves or in the soil debris at the base of the host plant.

The damage caused by Mocis frugalis is primarily mechanical, resulting from the larvae feeding on leaf tissue. In severe cases of infestation, the caterpillars strip the plants of their foliage, leaving only the main veins. Such heavy defoliation disrupts photosynthesis, leading to stunted plant growth and significant reductions in grain yield.

Management of this pest involves an integrated approach combining biological and chemical control methods. Regular field scouting is essential to identify infestations at an early stage. Chemical treatment with insecticides is generally recommended when larval populations exceed economic thresholds, ensuring adequate coverage for effective control.
