Monocesta is a genus of beetles belonging to the leaf beetle family, known as Chrysomelidae within the order Coleoptera. These insects are recognized as specific foliage feeders that can cause localized outbreaks in forest stands and urban landscapes, particularly within their native range in the Americas.
The primary hosts for this genus are plants within the Ulmaceae family, specifically elm trees. The species Monocesta coryli is a notable defoliator, capable of significantly reducing the canopy density of host trees when the population reaches high levels of density during the summer growing season.
The biological cycle of Monocesta consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult females typically deposit eggs in clusters on the underside of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae begin to feed gregariously, skeletonizing the leaf tissue while leaving the vascular veins intact, which is a diagnostic feature of their early feeding pattern.
The damage caused by these beetles is primarily characterized by the severe skeletonization of foliage. This extensive loss of leaf surface area inhibits the tree's ability to photosynthesize, leading to stress, branch dieback, and increased susceptibility to secondary pests or environmental stressors such as drought, which can ultimately lead to tree decline.
