Description

Systematic position: The juniper sawfly (Monoctenus juniperi) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Diprionidae. It is a specialized pest known for causing significant damage to various coniferous species, particularly those in the Cupressaceae family.

Host plants: The primary host of this pest is the juniper (Juniperus). It also frequently infests related conifers such as false cypress (Chamaecyparis) and occasionally arborvitae (Thuja). It is a common problem in both landscape gardening and commercial forest nurseries.

Biology and lifecycle: The adult sawflies emerge in the spring, typically from April to May. Females lay their eggs into the needle tissues. Once the larvae emerge, they feed gregariously on the needles. Their development typically lasts about four weeks, after which they drop to the ground to form cocoons, where they overwinter until the next spring.

Nature of damage and pest impact: Damage usually begins with larvae consuming the margins of the needles. As they grow, they can strip entire branches, leaving behind only the stems. Heavily infested plants show yellowing, browning, and premature needle drop, which drastically reduces their aesthetic value and physiological health, potentially predisposing them to secondary infestations.

Control measures: Management of the juniper sawfly requires a combination of monitoring and chemical intervention. In early spring, scouting for larval colonies is essential. If detected, contact or systemic insecticides are highly effective. Furthermore, cultural practices such as cultivating the soil under the canopy during late summer or autumn help disrupt the lifecycle by destroying the dormant cocoons in the soil.
