Red-shouldered leaf beetle

The red-shouldered leaf beetle (Monolepta australis) is a member of the Chrysomelidae family within the order Coleoptera. Native to Australia, this pest is notorious for its polyphagous nature, meaning it can feed on a vast range of plant species, posing a persistent threat to both commercial agriculture and ornamental horticulture.

This pest affects a wide variety of plants, including significant fruit crops such as avocados, citrus, mangoes, and lychees. In addition to orchard trees, it frequently attacks vegetable gardens, numerous flowering plants, and various tree species, often causing severe economic damage to growers who are not prepared for their sudden arrival.

The biological cycle of this beetle is highly sensitive to seasonal changes. Adult beetles are known for their swarming behavior, moving in large numbers and capable of defoliating entire orchards in a very short period. The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages; larvae dwell in the soil where they feed on root systems, making them particularly difficult to detect before the adults emerge.

Damage is characterized by the skeletal appearance of leaves, as the beetles consume the tissue between the veins, leaving behind a lace-like structure. Severe infestations result in extensive defoliation, which hampers the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis, leads to fruit drop, and can significantly stunt the growth and overall health of the affected crops.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:

• Application of registered insecticides during the peak of adult activity.
• Monitoring populations with the use of light traps to time spray applications.
• Maintaining clear areas around the base of trees to reduce larval survival rates.
• Using biological controls where applicable to minimize chemical reliance.
