Systematic position: The Caribbean spider mite (Mononychellus caribbeanae) is a member of the class Arachnida, order Acariformes, and the family Tetranychidae. It is a highly specialized mite species recognized as a significant agricultural pest in various tropical regions, specifically impacting tuberous crops.
Host plants: The mite primarily targets species within the Euphorbiaceae family. The most important host is cassava (Manihot esculenta), a vital food source in many parts of the world. Heavy infestations on cassava can severely reduce the yield of storage roots, which are essential for food security in affected areas.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle consists of an egg, larva, two nymphal stages (protonymph and deutonymph), and the adult stage.
