The Cattleya beetle (Mordellistena cattleyana) is a specialized pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Mordellidae. Known for their characteristic humped body shape, these beetles have evolved to feed specifically on the tissues of epiphytic orchids, primarily within the Cattleya genus, causing significant damage to indoor and greenhouse collections.

The primary host plants are various species and hybrids of the Cattleya genus. While they may occasionally affect other orchid species, the Cattleya group provides the ideal nutritional environment for the larvae. The pest thrives in controlled environments, making it a persistent threat to orchid enthusiasts and commercial growers alike.

The biology of Mordellistena cattleyana involves a lifecycle consisting of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Female beetles deposit eggs directly into the plant tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae begin mining through the internal structures of the orchid's pseudobulbs or flower stems, which serves as both their food source and shelter during development.

The damage caused by these beetles is often internal, making early detection difficult. Larval feeding destroys vital plant tissues, leading to compromised nutrient transport, wilting of flower spikes, and leaf dehydration. If left untreated, secondary infections such as bacterial or fungal rots often colonize the damaged tunnels, eventually leading to the death of the plant.
