Mycale is a genus of marine sponges within the family Mycalidae and the order Poecilosclerida. In the context of shellfish aquaculture, these organisms are considered significant biological pests, as their uncontrolled proliferation can lead to substantial economic losses for oyster and mussel farmers.
The sponges primarily affect bivalve mollusks, particularly those cultivated in suspension systems or bottom cages. By settling on the surface of the shells, the sponges create dense encrusting mats that inhibit the normal physiological processes of the host, including respiration and filter feeding.
The biology of Mycale involves a complex life cycle characterized by the production of free-swimming larvae. These larvae attach to hard substrates, including the shells of mature mollusks, where they quickly expand through asexual growth, eventually covering large portions of the host's outer shell surface.
Damage caused by these sponges is primarily mechanical. By blocking the opening of the valves, the sponge hinders the mollusk's ability to feed, leading to growth retardation and, in severe cases of total shell coverage, the eventual death of the shellfish due to starvation and lack of oxygen exchange.
