The biology of this species is characterized by its high colonization rate. Mycale massa spreads efficiently within the water column, utilizing the shells of live bivalves as a stable substrate. Once attached, it grows rapidly, effectively enveloping the host and interfering with its daily biological activities.

Its life cycle includes a free-swimming larval stage that settles onto suitable hard surfaces. The species thrives in environments with moderate temperatures and a high availability of suspended organic matter. Under these conditions, the sponge can quickly form extensive colonies that cover vast areas of aquaculture installations.

Damage caused by the sponge is primarily mechanical and physiological. By overgrowing the shells, the sponge hinders the ability of the bivalves to open their valves properly, which restricts feeding and respiration. This competition for space and nutrients results in stunted growth rates, weakened immune systems, and increased mortality among the cultured stocks.

Management and control strategies focus on integrated pest management practices. Key approaches include regular monitoring of lines and cages to detect early signs of infestation. Mechanical removal is the most common practice, while environmental manipulation—such as shifting the depth of culture nets or brief exposure to fresh water—can effectively stress and eliminate the sponge populations without harming the primary aquaculture crop.
