Description
Mytilicola is a genus of parasitic copepods (family Philichthyidae) that specifically infest bivalve mollusks. While they are not plant pests, they are significant biological threats in the aquaculture industry, often referred to as red worms due to the coloration of the females, which reside in the digestive tract of host organisms like mussels and oysters.
Taxonomically, these organisms belong to the subclass Copepoda. They have evolved into highly specialized endoparasites, with Mytilicola intestinalis being the most widely recognized species. Their presence inside the host's alimentary canal allows them to feed directly on nutrients, severely impacting the host's physiological functions.
The life cycle involves an aquatic larval stage where nauplii swim freely until they encounter a suitable host. Once a mollusk is located, the parasite penetrates the mantle cavity and migrates to the gut. The copepod then anchors itself to the intestinal lining, matures, and reproduces within the host, completing its complex development cycle.
The damage caused by Mytilicola is primarily manifested through the physical irritation of the mollusk's gut and the competition for nutrients. This leads to stunted growth, reduced meat quality, and lower market value. In severe infestations, the parasite significantly increases the mortality rate of shellfish, causing major economic challenges for commercial mollusk farming.
