Necrobia

The genus Necrobia belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cleridae. The most economically significant species is Necrobia rufipes, commonly referred to as the red-legged ham beetle. This pest is a major problem in warehouses, food processing facilities, and ports where it infests stored products of animal and plant origin.

The insect infests a wide range of goods, including dried meat, fish, cheeses, bone meal, and oily seeds such as copra or soybeans. Because it is highly adaptive, it thrives in warm, humid environments where organic debris is present, often becoming a permanent resident in poorly maintained storage facilities.

The life cycle of the red-legged ham beetle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adults are small, shiny, metallic blue or green beetles with distinctive reddish-orange legs. A female can lay numerous eggs over her lifespan, and the larvae are highly active feeders that thrive in the same food sources as the adults, completing their development in roughly one month under ideal conditions.

Damage caused by this pest is primarily structural and qualitative. Larvae and adults burrow into the stored items, creating tunnels that facilitate secondary infections by mold and bacteria. This renders food products unfit for human consumption, causes significant financial loss, and results in heavy contamination of stored commodities.

Management and control strategies include:

• Sanitation programs to remove food residues and debris from storage areas.
• Temperature and humidity control, as lower temperatures slow down the insect's development.
• Implementation of physical barriers and pest-proof packaging.
• Monitoring with pheromone or light traps to detect early infestations.
