Description

The red-legged ham beetle (Necrobia ruficollis) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Cleridae, commonly known as checkered beetles. Adult beetles are small, typically ranging from 3.5 to 5 millimeters in length. They are easily identified by their shiny, metallic blue-green elytra (wing covers) and a distinct reddish-brown pronotum and legs, which gives the species its common name.

This species is a well-known pest of stored products, primarily those of animal origin. It frequently infests cured meats, salted fish, cheese, hides, and dried animal products. While it is primarily associated with protein-rich materials, it can also be found in grain warehouses if there are secondary food sources like animal remains or populations of other stored-product insects that the larvae can prey upon.

The biological life cycle of Necrobia ruficollis progresses through complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs directly onto suitable food sources. Upon hatching, the larvae begin to feed immediately.
