Description
The red-legged ham beetle (Necrobia rufipes) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Cleridae. This insect is globally recognized as a significant pest of stored high-protein products, often found in warehouses, processing plants, and sometimes in households.
The beetle primarily targets food items of animal origin, such as dried fish, ham, bacon, cheese, and hides. It is also found in bone meal and dry pet food. While generally considered a secondary pest in grain stores, it can thrive in environments where other insects have already initiated damage or where humidity levels have caused fungal growth.
Its biological cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs directly onto the food source. Larvae are the primary destructive stage, consuming the host material rapidly. Under favorable environmental conditions, the insect completes its life cycle in less than two months, allowing for several generations per year.
Damage caused by this beetle includes the boring of extensive tunnels by both larvae and adults, leading to the internal destruction of the product. Beyond physical damage, the presence of the beetle introduces contamination through feces and larval exuviae, leading to the rapid deterioration and spoilage of stored stocks.
