Description
The cork moth (lat. Nemapogon cloacellus) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tineidae. It is widely recognized as an agricultural pest, particularly within the mushroom industry, where it can infest various cultivated fungal species by utilizing the growing medium and fruiting bodies for nutrition.
The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which bore into the mushrooms. By creating tunnels throughout the cap and stalk, they render the product unsellable. In addition to mushrooms, the pest is known to inhabit damp wood, cork materials, and decaying organic matter, allowing it to persist in structures even when primary hosts are absent.
The life cycle of the cork moth is highly dependent on ambient conditions. Female moths lay eggs on or near the substrate, and the emerging larvae begin feeding immediately. They spin silk threads, often leaving a web-like residue on the surface of the infected material, which is a key indicator of an active infestation in mushroom rooms.
Damage symptoms include irregular holes in the fruiting bodies and internal structural degradation. As larvae tunnel through the tissue, the mushrooms become soft and are susceptible to secondary bacterial infections. If left unmanaged, a population of cork moths can compromise an entire production cycle within a few weeks.
