Corn moth

The Corn moth (Nemapogon variatella) is a member of the Tineidae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is a common insect pest that primarily infests stored grain, seeds, and various dried agricultural products. While it may appear inconspicuous, its presence in grain stores can lead to significant economic losses if not managed correctly.

This pest is known for its ability to infest a wide variety of commodities. It feeds on wheat, corn, barley, beans, dried mushrooms, and vegetable products. The moth thrives in environments where grain is stored in bulk, especially in poorly ventilated storage facilities, silos, and warehouses where hygiene standards are neglected.

The life cycle of Nemapogon variatella consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the most destructive, as larvae possess chewing mouthparts designed for consuming stored materials. Development rates are heavily dependent on temperature and moisture levels; in favorable conditions, several generations can be completed in a single year.

Infestation is characterized by the presence of silken webbing covering the grain kernels. Larvae bore into the seeds, consuming the nutrient-rich interior. Their waste, along with pupal cases and larval silk, contaminates the grain mass, reducing its quality, market value, and nutritional content. Heavily infested batches often become clumped and start to develop mold growth.

Effective control measures require a systematic approach to warehouse hygiene and climate management. Early detection and prevention are the most efficient ways to mitigate the risk of population outbreaks.
