Nematocampa

Nematocampa is a genus of moths belonging to the family Geometridae, order Lepidoptera. These insects are well-known for their unique larvae, commonly referred to as inchworms or spanworms, which possess distinct body structures and behaviors that allow them to perfectly camouflage themselves as twigs or plant parts.

The pest primarily affects woody plants and shrubs. Its host range includes fruit trees such as apples and pears, as well as various species of deciduous forest trees. When population levels are high, these caterpillars can cause significant defoliation and aesthetic damage to ornamental plantings and orchards.

The biological life cycle of Nematocampa typically involves four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult moth. Overwintering usually occurs in the egg or pupal stage, depending on environmental conditions. Larvae emerge in the spring to feed aggressively on fresh foliage and buds, progressing through several instars before pupation occurs.

Damage is characterized by leaf skeletonization or complete defoliation. A unique feature of Nematocampa caterpillars is the presence of specialized dorsal projections on their bodies, allowing them to mimic dry twigs or bark fragments. This exceptional camouflage makes early detection by growers significantly more challenging.

Control measures rely on a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Monitoring adult moth populations using light traps is essential for timing interventions. If population density exceeds economic thresholds, targeted applications of biological insecticides or systemic chemicals during the larval feeding stage are recommended.
