Description
The Pale-spotted gooseberry sawfly (Nematus leucotrochus) is a member of the Hymenoptera order, specifically the family Tenthredinidae. It is a well-known pest that primarily targets small fruit bushes, posing a significant risk to the overall health and productivity of the plants.
The primary host plants for this species are gooseberries and currants (specifically red and white currants). The larvae are highly voracious and can cause severe defoliation, which directly impacts the plant's vigor and its ability to store energy for the subsequent season.
The life cycle begins with the overwintering of larvae in cocoons within the soil beneath the host bushes. As the temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge and mate, after which females lay eggs along the veins on the underside of the leaves. There may be multiple generations depending on the regional climate.
The larvae damage the plant by feeding on the leaves. Initially, they create small holes (skeletonizing), but as they mature, they consume entire leaf blades, often leaving only the main veins. A heavy infestation can leave a bush completely defoliated in a very short period of time, leading to fruit drop and reduced fruit quality.

- Cultivating the soil around the base of the bushes in autumn to expose overwintering cocoons to predators and frost.
