Willow sawfly

Systematic position: The willow sawfly (Latin Nematus pavidus) belongs to the order Hymenoptera, family Tenthredinidae. This insect is a significant pest known for its larvae's ability to quickly strip foliage from host plants in forest plantations and landscape gardening.

Host plants: The primary hosts are species within the genus Salix (willow) and Populus (poplar). These insects are particularly attracted to young, vigorous growth, making them a common issue in willow nurseries, hedge plantations, and private garden collections where willow trees are used for aesthetic purposes.

Biology and life cycle: Nematus pavidus typically undergoes two or more generations per year depending on local climatic conditions. Females lay eggs individually or in groups into the leaf tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae feed gregariously in their early stages. They progress through several instars before descending to the soil or protected crevices to pupate in resilient, oval cocoons.

Damage and impact: Larvae are voracious defoliators. Younger larvae skeletonize the leaves, while older instars consume the entire leaf lamina, leaving only the primary veins intact. This behavior can result in massive defoliation, which causes significant stress to the host tree, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the death of young saplings after repeated annual attacks.

Protection measures: Effective management relies on a strategic combination of methods:

• Regular visual monitoring of leaf undersides to detect egg batches and early-stage larvae.
• Physical removal of infested leaves and branches during the early stages of the attack.
• Autumn cultivation of the soil around host plants to expose and kill overwintering pupae.
• Targeted application of biological insecticides, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, or systemic chemical treatments during the peak larval feeding window.
