Gooseberry sawfly

The Gooseberry sawfly (lat. Nematus ribesii) is a significant pest belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. It is widely recognized by horticulturists for its ability to cause severe defoliation of fruit bushes, which is why integrated pest management is essential for successful berry production.

This pest primarily attacks plants within the Ribes genus, including gooseberries, as well as red, white, and black currants. The damage is exclusively caused by the larvae, often referred to as false caterpillars, which hatch in large numbers and can strip a healthy shrub of its foliage within a matter of days.

The biology of the gooseberry sawfly is characterized by several generations per year. They overwinter as larvae in cocoons buried within the soil beneath the host plants. In early spring, adults emerge to mate and lay eggs on the undersides of the leaves. The larvae progress through several instars, growing larger and more voracious as they mature.

Damage symptoms usually start as small pin-sized holes in the leaves, progressing to complete defoliation, leaving only the veins behind. This extensive loss of leaf area prevents the plant from photosynthesizing efficiently, which significantly reduces the quality and quantity of the fruit crop and weakens the plant for the following season.

Control strategies should be proactive. Gardeners are advised to monitor bushes carefully during the spring season. Cultivation of the soil under the bushes can help expose and destroy overwintering cocoons. When infestation levels are high, biological controls such as Bacillus thuringiensis or approved contact insecticides may be necessary to protect the harvest.

• Regular inspection of leaf undersides for egg clusters.
• Hand-picking larvae from smaller shrubs.
• Mulching around the base to discourage adult emergence.
• Application of neem oil or insecticidal soap in the early larval stages.
