Willow sawfly
Nematus ventralis
Description
Nematus ventralis, commonly known as the willow sawfly, belongs to the family Tenthredinidae within the order Hymenoptera. This pest is a significant defoliator, primarily targeting various species of willow (Salix) and occasionally poplars in both nurseries and mature landscapes.
The host range of this insect is restricted mainly to Salicaceae. The sawflies are particularly destructive in early to mid-summer when the larvae emerge. Because they feed gregariously during their early stages, they can rapidly cause localized but severe damage to branches and sections of the tree crown.
The biology of the willow sawfly is synchronized with the bud burst and leaf development of its host. Females insert eggs into the leaf tissue. After hatching, the larvae undergo several larval instars, skeletonizing the leaves before eventually descending to the ground to pupate in the soil. There are typically one to several generations per year depending on the regional climate.
The damage caused by Nematus ventralis is primarily cosmetic and physiological. While a healthy, mature tree can usually withstand partial defoliation, repeated or heavy infestations lead to premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and a reduction in the overall vigor of the plant, making it more susceptible to secondary stressors like drought or fungal pathogens.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this sawfly species. Key management practices involve:
- Monitoring foliage for early signs of skeletonization and larvae clusters.
- Hand-picking and destroying larvae in small gardens or young trees.
- Applying horticultural soaps or neem-based products for larvae control.
- Using approved contact insecticides when infestations are widespread and severe.
- Maintaining healthy tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil management to promote natural recovery.
