Description
Systematic position. The birch moth (Nemaxera betulinella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tineidae. This species is a specialized pest that is closely associated with certain hardwood tree species, predominantly those of the genus Betula.
Host plants. The primary hosts for Nemaxera betulinella larvae are various species of birch trees. Infestations are frequently observed in forest stands, urban parks, and ornamental nurseries where these trees are present in high densities, providing stable conditions for the pest's reproduction.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of this insect is synchronized with the phenological development of the host tree. Larvae overwinter in forest litter or deep crevices of the bark. In spring, they resume feeding on developing foliage. Pupation typically occurs within the mined leaf tissue or in protective cocoons hidden on the plant surface.
Nature of damage and pest status. As a leaf miner, the larvae of Nemaxera betulinella feed within the leaf tissue, creating distinct galleries. This activity disrupts photosynthesis and leads to premature chlorosis, leaf curling, and shedding.
