Neoasterodiaspis
Neoasterodiaspis
Description
Systematic position. Neoasterodiaspis is a genus of scale insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Asterolecaniidae. These insects are known for their ability to blend into the bark of host plants, often forming pits or galls that protect their bodies while they feed on the host's nutrients.
Affected crops. This pest primarily attacks woody plants and ornamental trees. It is frequently observed on various hardwood species, particularly oaks (Quercus spp.). Their presence is often identified in nurseries and urban plantings where they can cause significant aesthetic and structural damage to trees over several growing seasons.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves sedentary females protected by a wax or cuticle-based scale covering. The most mobile stage is the first-instar nymph, known as a "crawler." These crawlers disperse across the host plant to find suitable feeding sites, where they eventually settle, insert their mouthparts into the plant tissue, and develop their protective shells.
Damage and pest status. The damage is caused by the withdrawal of phloem sap, which deprives the tree of essential nutrients. This feeding activity often induces plant tissue proliferation around the insect, creating characteristic pits. Heavy infestations result in chlorosis, reduced vigor, stunted growth, and dieback of branches, making the trees susceptible to secondary pathogens and environmental stress.
Protection measures. Effective control requires a multi-faceted approach. Monitoring for crawler emergence is crucial for timing insecticide applications accurately. Systemic insecticides are generally effective as they translocate within the plant vascular system. Additionally, the use of dormant oils can be highly effective in suffocating overwintering stages. Proper pruning and maintaining tree health are essential cultural practices to mitigate the impact of the infestation.
