Description

The genus Neocaridina (family Atyidae, order Decapoda) comprises freshwater shrimp species. While often viewed as beneficial in ornamental fish keeping, they can act as pests in professional hydroponic and aquaponic setups where they damage young plant tissues and interfere with commercial crop production.

These organisms target succulent aquatic plants, seedlings, and root systems. In controlled environment agriculture (CEA), when natural food sources like algae and detritus are insufficient, Neocaridina specimens tend to feed on plant roots, root hairs, and young tender foliage, directly reducing the viability of the crop.

The biology of these crustaceans is characterized by a direct life cycle, with juveniles hatching as miniature versions of adults. Their high reproductive rate and adaptability to various water conditions allow them to colonize hydroponic pipelines and nutrient reservoirs rapidly, making them a persistent challenge to manage once established.

The economic harm caused by Neocaridina stems from both direct mechanical damage and the facilitation of pathogens. By grazing on roots, they create entry points for soil-borne and water-borne fungi and bacteria, which can lead to widespread root rot, decreased nutrient uptake, and systemic plant failure.

Effective management strategies include:

  • Implementing physical barriers and fine filtration at system intakes.
  • Routine sanitation of hydroponic reservoirs to remove organic waste.
  • Monitoring nutrient solutions to ensure optimal levels that do not support excess shrimp biomass.
  • Strategic removal using species-specific traps or controlled adjustments to water chemistry.
