Neocaridina denticulata is a crustacean belonging to the order Decapoda and the family Atyidae. While widely regarded as beneficial algae eaters, they can act as pests under specific environmental conditions, particularly when the population density is high or nutritional requirements for protein are not met, leading them to feed on aquatic plants.

These shrimp primarily target plants with delicate, feathery, or soft leaf structures. Species such as Rotala, Blyxa, or Hemianthus are most susceptible, as the shrimp find the young, succulent shoots easiest to consume when other dietary sources are insufficient for their metabolic needs.

The biology of Neocaridina is characterized by a rapid reproductive cycle. Females carry eggs under their abdomen, which hatch into fully developed juvenile shrimp. This direct development bypasses the larval stage in the water column, allowing for exponential population growth that can overwhelm a small aquarium's ecosystem.

The damage manifested by these shrimp includes ragged leaf edges, holes in the lamina, and the complete destruction of new growth tips. Once a plant is damaged, it loses its competitive advantage in photosynthesis, leading to reduced vigor and making it susceptible to secondary colonization by hair or black beard algae.
