Neochetina

Neochetina is a genus of weevils in the family Curculionidae, widely recognized for its role in the biological control of the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). These insects are considered beneficial biological agents because they specifically target one of the world's most invasive aquatic plants, which often chokes irrigation channels and disrupts river ecosystems.

The life cycle of Neochetina is intricately tied to its host plant. Adult beetles feed on the leaves, while larvae bore into the petioles and stems of the water hyacinth.
