Description

The fruit weevil (Neocoenorrhinus assimilis), also known as the apple bud weevil, belongs to the Attelabidae family. This small beetle is a significant pest in fruit orchards, characterized by its metallic blue or green coloration. It is widely recognized by horticulturists as one of the earliest spring pests that can jeopardize the health of fruit trees from the moment buds begin to swell.

The primary host plants for this pest are fruit trees, including apples, pears, plums, cherries, and apricots. The adults target developing buds, blossoms, and young foliage. By feeding on these critical parts, the pest interferes with the initial growth phase of the tree, which can lead to reduced flowering and poor fruit set during the subsequent season.

The life cycle of the fruit weevil begins with overwintering in the soil as an adult. As temperatures rise in early spring, the beetles emerge and begin feeding. Females lay eggs by puncturing the petioles of leaves or the soft tissues of young shoots. This action causes the affected leaves to wither, curl, and eventually drop, disrupting the tree’s photosynthetic capacity.

The damage caused by the fruit weevil is both direct and indirect. Direct damage includes the destruction of buds and shoots, while indirect damage stems from the stress induced by defoliation, making the trees more susceptible to secondary infections and environmental stress. In severe infestations, the cumulative loss of leaf mass can significantly diminish the overall vitality and yields of the orchard.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Cultural practices such as tilling the soil around tree bases can disturb the pupation cycle of the beetle. Physical removal, such as shaking the trees onto catch-sheets early in the morning, is highly effective in smaller orchards. If populations exceed economic injury levels, targeted application of appropriate insecticides during the pre-bloom stage is recommended to minimize impact on pollinators.
