European pine sawfly

Systematic position: The European pine sawfly (Neodiprion sertifer) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Diprionidae. It is widely recognized as a significant defoliating pest of coniferous trees, particularly affecting pine species in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere.

Host plants: The pest primarily targets various species of pines, including Scots pine, lodgepole pine, and other native and introduced varieties. While it favors pine, it is occasionally observed on other conifers, causing economic damage in both commercial timber plantations and nursery settings.

Biology and life cycle: The species typically completes one generation per year. It overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs embedded in needles. Larvae emerge in the spring, feeding gregariously on old foliage. By early summer, the larvae drop to the forest floor to spin cocoons and pupate, remaining there until the adult sawflies emerge in the fall to mate and lay eggs.

Damage and severity: Larvae cause severe defoliation by consuming the needles, starting from the edges and eventually consuming the entire needle. While the trees may survive moderate defoliation, repeated attacks lead to stunted growth, reduced wood volume, and weakened trees that become susceptible to secondary infestations by bark beetles and pathogens.

Control measures: Management of the pest relies on integrated pest management strategies:

• Regular monitoring of egg clusters and larval colonies to assess population density.
• Application of viral insecticides (nucleopolyhedrovirus) which are specific to the species and eco-friendly.
• Use of registered chemical insecticides during early larval stages when they are most vulnerable.
• Preservation of natural predators, such as parasitic wasps and predatory beetles, to maintain biological balance.
