Description
Systematic position. Burke's pine sawfly (Neodiprion burkei) belongs to the order Hymenoptera, family Diprionidae (conifer sawflies). It is a specialized forest pest known for its specific host plant association and significant impact on pine forest ecosystems.
Host plants. This species primarily feeds on pine trees, with Pinus contorta (lodgepole pine) being its main host. The insect is capable of causing extensive defoliation in both natural stands and forestry plantations, significantly impacting the growth and health of the trees.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs inside the needles using their saw-like ovipositor.
