Description
Systematic position: Neodiprion edwardsii belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Diprionidae. This specialized pest is closely associated with various coniferous species, primarily those within the genus Pinus. It is recognized as a significant defoliator in North American forest ecosystems.
Host plants: The larvae feed exclusively on the needles of various pine species. The damage causes physiological stress to the trees, making them susceptible to secondary infestations by wood-boring insects, such as bark beetles and longhorned beetles, eventually leading to tree mortality during outbreaks.
Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis. Females use their saw-like ovipositors to insert eggs into the pine needles. The larvae, which resemble caterpillars, pass through several instars while actively consuming foliage. Overwintering occurs typically as a prepupa within a tough, papery cocoon, usually found in the forest duff or soil beneath the host tree.
Nature of damage: During the early stages of development, larvae may only graze the needles, but later instars consume the entire foliage, leaving only the central midrib or bare twigs.
