Pine sawfly

The pine sawfly (Neodiprion exitans) is a significant defoliating pest that affects coniferous forests globally. Belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Diprionidae, this insect is known for its ability to cause severe damage to pine stands by feeding on needles, which can lead to widespread forest decline if not properly managed.

The primary hosts for Neodiprion exitans are species within the Pinus genus. The larvae exhibit a strong preference for young and semi-mature trees. Because these trees are in a critical growth phase, the loss of foliage caused by sawfly infestations severely stunts their development and renders them susceptible to drought and secondary pathogens.

The life cycle of the sawfly consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females utilize an ovipositor to insert eggs into the pine needles. Once hatched, the gregarious larvae feed collectively on the needles. This group behavior is a survival strategy that allows them to overwhelm the tree's natural defenses rapidly.

Damage is characterized by the consumption of pine needles. Young larvae usually feed on the edges of the needles, while later instars consume the entire structure, often leaving only the needle sheath behind. Severe defoliation results in reduced radial growth, and repeated attacks typically lead to crown dieback and tree mortality within the infested forest stands.

Effective management requires a combination of surveillance and intervention. Key strategies include:
