Description
Taxonomic position: The Ponderosa pine sawfly (Neodiprion fulviceps) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Diprionidae. It is a well-known forest pest recognized for its periodic outbreaks that impact coniferous ecosystems and managed pine plantations across North America.
Host plants: This species specializes in feeding on various pine trees. It is most frequently associated with the Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) and the Jeffrey pine. While adults cause minimal direct damage, the larval stage is responsible for significant defoliation of mature and young trees.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is characterized by a single generation per year in many regions. Adult females lay eggs into slits cut into the needles. Larvae are social feeders, remaining in groups throughout their development. Once mature, they drop to the soil to form cocoons within the forest litter to pupate.
Damage and economic impact: Larvae feed gregariously on pine needles, usually consuming the entire needle down to the sheath. In high population densities, they can strip a tree of most of its needles.
