White pine sawfly
Neodiprion pinetum
Description
Taxonomic position. The White pine sawfly (scientific name: Neodiprion pinetum) is a member of the order Hymenoptera and the family Diprionidae. It is a highly specialized defoliator that specifically targets coniferous trees, acting as a significant threat to forest vitality and plantation health.
Host plants. This pest primarily attacks various species of pine, with a strong preference for Pinus strobus (Eastern white pine) and other pine species. It frequently targets young saplings, though established trees can also suffer if populations reach high enough levels to cause extensive needle loss.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay their eggs in slits cut into the pine needles. Upon hatching, the larvae, which resemble caterpillars, feed in groups. After finishing their development, they spin protective, tough cocoons, often attached to needles or twigs, to undergo pupation before emerging as adults.
Nature of damage and pest status. Larvae are voracious feeders that consume entire needles, often starting from the tip and working downwards. Heavy infestations result in severe defoliation of branches, which leaves the tree visually sparse. This defoliation leads to a significant loss of photosynthetic capacity, reduced growth, and in severe cases, the death of the tree due to stress and subsequent attacks by secondary pests.
Control measures. Management strategies focus on both preventive and reactive actions. Key methods include regular monitoring of larval colonies during the feeding season and maintaining healthy stands through silvicultural practices. If thresholds are exceeded, biological controls or targeted insecticides can be employed to minimize economic and ecological damage. Promoting natural predators, such as parasitic wasps, is also an effective long-term strategy.
