Description
Systematic position: Neodiprion rugifrons belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Diprionidae. It is a significant defoliator insect that specializes in coniferous hosts, particularly within the pine genus, posing a threat to both natural forests and commercial plantations.
Host plants: The primary hosts for this pest include various pine species, most notably Jack pine, Scots pine, and Eastern white pine. It frequently targets young saplings and nursery stock, though mature stands can also suffer significant damage during localized outbreaks.
Biology and life cycle: The species typically undergoes a complete metamorphosis. It overwinters in the egg stage, inserted into needles. Larvae emerge in spring and exhibit strong gregarious behavior, feeding in clusters.
