Systematic position: The European pine sawfly (Neodiprion sertifer) belongs to the order Hymenoptera, family Diprionidae. It is a significant forest pest that primarily attacks various species of pine, including Scots pine, mountain pine, and black pine, often causing extensive defoliation in plantations and nurseries.

Biology and life cycle: This species typically has one generation per year. They overwinter as eggs inserted into the needles of the previous year's growth. Larvae emerge in the spring, usually aligning with the onset of bud burst. These larvae are gregarious and feed in clusters. They undergo several molts before spinning tough, papery cocoons in the leaf litter or on the twigs to pupate.

Feeding behavior and damage: The damage is exclusively caused by the larvae, which are voracious eaters. Young larvae skeletonize the needle edges, causing them to wilt and bend. As they mature, they consume the entire needle down to the sheath. Heavy infestations result in severe defoliation, which stunts tree growth, weakens the crown, and leaves trees vulnerable to opportunistic secondary invaders like bark beetles.

Control measures: Effective management requires an integrated approach that includes monitoring, biological control, and targeted insecticide applications. In forestry, biological agents such as nuclear polyhedrosis viruses (NPV) are highly effective, as they are species-specific and environmentally safe. Early detection during the larval stage is crucial for minimizing tree damage.
