The heather moth (Neofaculta ericetella) is a small moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. This species is a specialized pest found primarily in regions with natural heathlands and is a significant threat to decorative heather plantings in gardens and nurseries.
The primary food source for this pest consists of plants from the Ericaceae family, particularly common heather (Calluna vulgaris). The larvae consume young shoots, buds, and leaves during their active growth phase, often causing localized stress to the host plant.
The life cycle of the heather moth is synchronized with the phenology of its host plant. Females deposit eggs on young stems or foliage, which subsequently hatch into larvae. Depending on the local climate and temperature conditions, the insect typically completes one or two generations per year.
The most characteristic sign of an infestation is the damage to the apical shoots. The larvae bind leaves and tips of young branches together with silk, creating protective nests or webs. Within these enclosures, they feed on plant tissues, causing the affected parts to wither, leading to plant deformation and a decline in aesthetic value.
Effective control strategies involve a combination of horticultural practices and chemical interventions. During the growing season, it is recommended to monitor plants for webbing and remove infested areas manually. In cases of severe infestation, the application of systemic insecticides is necessary to reach the larvae protected within their silken nests.
