Medium thrips

Taxonomic classification. Neohydatothrips medius is a member of the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. Like other thrips species, it is characterized by very small body size and fringe-like wings. As a pest, it often causes economic damage by feeding on plant tissues and facilitating the spread of various stress factors within the plant canopy.

Host plants. This species primarily feeds on leguminous plants (family Fabaceae). In agricultural landscapes, it commonly colonizes crops such as soybeans, alfalfa, and clover. Its preference for specific hosts means that farmers cultivating these crops need to maintain a strict scouting program to prevent outbreaks.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves several distinct stages: egg, two larval instars, propupa, pupa, and adult. The duration of each stage is heavily dependent on ambient temperature and humidity. Higher temperatures significantly accelerate the development of generations, leading to rapid population growth during the mid-summer period.

Damage and economic impact. Both larvae and adults damage plants by piercing surface cells and consuming the contents. This feeding activity leads to necrotic, silver-white spots or streaks on leaves. Severe infestations cause leaf curling, stunted growth, flower abortion, and significant reduction in photosynthetic efficiency, which ultimately impacts yield quantity and quality.

Control and management. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling N. medius. This includes cultural practices such as removing weed hosts and tilling soil to destroy pupation sites. Chemical control should be implemented judiciously, using systemic insecticides when threshold levels are reached, to minimize impact on beneficial predatory insects.
