Opuntia thrips

The Opuntia thrips (Neohydatothrips opuntiae) is a member of the Thripidae family within the order Thysanoptera. This insect is a specialized pest that primarily targets cacti of the Opuntia genus. Due to their small size and cryptic habits, these thrips often go unnoticed until significant damage has already occurred to the plant tissues.

This pest feeds by piercing plant cells and extracting sap, primarily focusing on the flattened cladodes of Opuntia. While they show a high preference for Opuntia, in greenhouse conditions where cacti are kept in close proximity, the infestation can spread to other succulent species, making them a significant concern for botanical collections and commercial growers.

The lifecycle of the Opuntia thrips consists of several stages: egg, two larval instars, prepupa, pupa, and adult. The developmental time is highly dependent on ambient temperature and humidity. Adult females insert eggs into the succulent tissue, and the larval stages are typically found feeding in sheltered spots, such as around the base of spines or where segments connect.

Feeding damage is characterized by a silvery or bleached appearance on the surface of the cactus pads, often followed by corking or scarring of the tissue. Heavy infestations lead to stunted growth, loss of vigor, and permanent disfigurement of the plant. Furthermore, the lesions created by the thrips' feeding activity can serve as entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria.

Management of this pest requires a combination of cultural and chemical tactics:

• Isolate newly acquired plants to prevent the introduction of the pest.
• Apply systemic insecticides that are translocated throughout the cactus tissues.
• Use yellow sticky traps to monitor and reduce adult thrips populations.
• Prune and destroy heavily infested plant segments to reduce the source of infection.
• Maintain proper air circulation to ensure a less favorable environment for thrips development.
