Neosilba is a genus of flies belonging to the family Lonchaeidae. While many members of this family are saprophagous, acting as decomposers, certain species of Neosilba are recognized as significant agricultural pests that directly impact crop production in various parts of the world.
This pest affects a wide range of fruit-bearing plants, including cassava, citrus, coffee, cacao, and apple trees. The economic impact is often tied to the destruction of fruit tissue, which significantly lowers the marketability and quality of harvested agricultural products.
The life cycle of Neosilba involves complete metamorphosis: eggs, three larval stages, pupae, and adults. Female flies typically oviposit into existing wounds or natural openings in the fruit skin. The damage caused by these larvae is characterized by internal tunneling within the fruit.
