Neosilba pendula is a species of fly in the family Lonchaeidae, belonging to the order Diptera. Often referred to as a significant fruit pest, this insect has gained notoriety due to its ability to infest a wide variety of fruit crops. Its rapid reproductive cycle and adaptability make it a challenging target for pest control programs in agricultural settings.

The host range of this pest is extensive, primarily targeting tropical and subtropical fruits. Major crops affected include passion fruit, avocado, coffee, citrus, and various other orchard commodities. The larvae are opportunistic feeders, often colonizing fruit that has already been punctured or is in a state of ripening, though they can also infest healthy tissues.

The life cycle of Neosilba pendula consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs in small cracks or punctures in the fruit skin. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the fruit, feeding on the fleshy interior. The pupal stage commonly occurs in the soil beneath the host plant, although some larvae may pupate within decaying fruit.

When larvae feed inside the fruit, they create galleries that lead to structural failure and the entry of secondary pathogens, such as bacteria and fungi. This results in significant quantitative and qualitative losses for farmers, rendering the harvest unmarketable.
