Description

Systematic position. Neotetranychus belongs to the class Arachnida, order Trombidiformes, and the family Tetranychidae (spider mites). These are small but highly destructive phytophagous pests that are widely distributed in various climatic zones, often causing severe damage to ornamental and forest tree species.

Host plants. These mites primarily infest woody plants, showing a high preference for conifers and various broad-leaved trees. They are known to cause significant physiological stress to their hosts by feeding on young needles or leaves, often leading to stunted growth and premature defoliation in severe infestations.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Neotetranychus consists of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Development is highly temperature-dependent, with rapid generations occurring during hot and dry weather conditions. Adult females overwinter in bark crevices or under plant debris, emerging in early spring to initiate new infestations.

Damage and economic impact. Mites feed by piercing plant cells and extracting the sap, which causes the destruction of chlorophyll. The damage manifests as localized chlorotic spots that eventually turn brown or grey. Economic damage occurs through reduced plant vigor, aesthetic devaluation of ornamental plants, and potential death of young saplings in nurseries.

Recommended control measures include the following:

  • Regular monitoring of host plants for early signs of mite activity.
  • Timely application of acaricides or mite-specific pesticides.
  • Maintaining adequate plant hydration to prevent drought-induced stress.
