Raspberry spider mite

Systematic position. The raspberry spider mite (Neotetranychus rubi) is classified within the class Arachnida, order Acariformes, and family Tetranychidae. It is a specialized pest that primarily targets species within the Rubus genus, causing significant physiological stress to both raspberry and blackberry plants.

Host plants and damage symptoms. Raspberry crops are the primary hosts for this mite species. These pests colonize the abaxial (lower) surface of leaves, where they pierce cells to consume plant sap. The initial damage appears as fine chlorotic stippling, which eventually coalesces, leading to leaf bronzing, desiccation, and premature leaf drop.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. The speed of development is highly dependent on environmental factors, thriving in hot, arid climates. Fertilized females overwinter in sheltered areas, such as bark crevices, leaf litter, or the upper soil layer, emerging in spring as temperatures rise.

Economic impact. Infestation by Neotetranychus rubi can result in substantial yield losses, sometimes exceeding 40% in severe cases. The reduction of photosynthetic surface area limits the plant’s ability to store carbohydrates, leading to reduced vigor, smaller fruit size, and compromised winter hardiness, which affects the following year's harvest potential.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective mite control:

• Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infested plant debris.
• Maintaining optimal irrigation to reduce dust and create a microclimate less favorable for mites.
• Targeted application of acaricides during the pre-bloom and post-harvest stages.
• Encouraging or releasing beneficial predatory mites to suppress pest numbers naturally.
