Spotted crane fly

Nephrotoma cornicina

Description

The spotted crane fly (Nephrotoma cornicina) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tipulidae. Often mistaken for large mosquitoes, these insects do not bite humans. However, in agriculture, they are recognized as significant soil-dwelling pests because their larvae, known as leatherjackets, reside in the soil and feed on plant structures.

This species poses a threat to a wide range of crops, including wheat, barley, maize, sugar beet, and various vegetables. The larvae are particularly damaging during the seedling stage, as they target the root systems, stems below the soil surface, and germinating seeds, which inevitably leads to significant gaps in plant stands and reduced crop density.

The biological cycle consists of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Adults typically lay eggs in moist, shaded soil environments rich in organic matter. The larvae are characterized by a tough, leathery skin, which gives them the name "leatherjackets." They develop underground, often passing through several instars and overwintering as larvae to resume feeding early in the following spring.

Pest damage is often identified by the sudden wilting of plants or the presence of bare patches in the field. Because the larvae feed on the roots, the plant loses its ability to absorb nutrients and water, leading to stunting or rapid death. Infestations are usually more severe following wet seasons, as moisture is a critical factor for both egg survival and larval activity.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for controlling this insect:

  • Improve soil drainage to make the environment less favorable for egg-laying females.
  • Implement mechanical soil cultivation, such as plowing, which exposes larvae to predators and desiccation.
  • Practice crop rotation to disrupt the life cycle of the pest.
  • Apply targeted soil insecticides or use seed treatments if the threshold of larval density is exceeded during pre-planting assessments.
