Description

Systematic position. The spotted crane fly (Nephrotoma crocata) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tipulidae. These insects are well-known in agricultural entomology due to the destructive behavior of their larvae, which reside in the soil and act as significant pests of various cultivated plants.

Host plants. This species is a polyphage. It primarily attacks cereal crops, grasses, vegetables, and young seedlings of crops like sugar beet and maize. The larvae are particularly dangerous in greenhouse environments and fields with high soil moisture, where they can thrive undisturbed.

Biology and life cycle. Adults do not damage crops but are responsible for laying eggs in moist soil. The larval stage is the most damaging phase. Larvae go through several instars while living beneath the soil surface, feeding on decaying organic matter and living roots. The life cycle is heavily influenced by soil temperature and humidity levels throughout the season.
