Systematic position: Nepytia canosaria is a moth species belonging to the Geometridae family within the order Lepidoptera. Known commonly as the false hemlock looper, it is recognized in forestry management as a foliage-feeding insect capable of causing significant economic losses in conifer forests across its range.

Host plants and damage: The species primarily targets various conifer species, with a strong preference for spruce (Picea), fir (Abies), and pine (Pinus). The primary damage is caused by the larval stage, which feeds on needles. High population densities often result in severe defoliation, leading to tree mortality if the infestation persists over several consecutive years.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is univoltine, meaning one generation per year. Eggs are laid in the late summer and fall, overwintering on the bark of host trees. Larvae emerge in the spring to feed on both old and new foliage. Pupation typically occurs in the late summer, followed by the emergence of the adult moths that complete the reproductive cycle.

Nature of injury: The damage typically begins in the mid-to-upper crown of the tree. Larvae strip the needles, leaving ragged foliage that turns reddish-brown. This loss of photosynthetic capacity weakens the host, making it susceptible to secondary invaders such as bark beetles. Repeated defoliation eventually leads to top-kill or the death of the entire tree.
