Description
Nesothrips propinquus is a species of thrips belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Phlaeothripidae. Unlike some species that are exclusively plant feeders, these insects often exhibit a mixed feeding habit, occasionally associating with fungal spores found on decaying or stressed plant tissues.
The pest primarily affects ornamental plants and a variety of woody vegetation. It thrives in humid environments, frequently colonizing the underside of leaves or sheltered areas where microclimate conditions support both the insect's lifecycle and the growth of epiphytic fungi.
The lifecycle consists of several stages: egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. Under favorable conditions, the development cycle is relatively short, allowing for multiple generations per year, which can lead to rapid population explosions if not controlled during the initial stages of infestation.
Feeding damage is characterized by chlorotic spotting, leaf curling, and severe distortion of growing tips. By piercing plant cells to extract sap, Nesothrips propinquus causes significant physiological stress, often resulting in reduced yields and diminished aesthetic quality of host plants.
