Netelia

Netelia is a genus of large, often nocturnal ichneumonid wasps. In agricultural science, these insects are classified primarily as beneficial parasitoids rather than pests, as their larvae prey on the caterpillars of various lepidopteran species that cause significant damage to crops.

These wasps target a wide range of hosts, including cutworms, loopers, and leafrollers, which commonly infest vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and field crops. By regulating the populations of these primary pests, Netelia plays a crucial role in integrated pest management (IPM) systems.

The life cycle involves the adult female wasp ovipositing directly into the larvae of the host moth. The developing larva of the wasp remains internal, feeding on the host's body tissues. This process ensures the death of the caterpillar before it can complete its development into a destructive adult.

Any perceived damage attributed to Netelia is generally limited to superficial marks on plant tissues or fruits caused by the female's ovipositor. These marks are rarely of economic significance, as they do not typically cause yield loss, although they may serve as an entry point for fungal or bacterial pathogens in sensitive crops.

Management strategies focus on maintaining ecological balance rather than eradication, given the beneficial nature of these insects. If their presence in greenhouses becomes problematic, the following steps are recommended:
