Nisotra

Nisotra is a genus of flea beetles within the family Chrysomelidae. These small but destructive insects are notorious for their preference for plants in the Malvaceae family. Among the species, Nisotra orbiculata is frequently cited as a major pest in agricultural systems, particularly in warmer climates where it can cause significant yield loss.

The primary host crops for Nisotra include okra (Abelmoschus esculentus), hibiscus, and cotton. The pest prefers soft, succulent plant tissues, making seedlings particularly susceptible to early-season infestation. If left unmanaged, the pest population can multiply rapidly, leading to stunted plant growth and poor fruit development.

The biology of Nisotra is influenced by environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature. Females lay eggs in the soil near the base of the plant or on the underside of leaves. Larvae generally feed on the root systems or stem bases, while adults consume the foliage. This dual feeding habit makes the insect challenging to control effectively with a single approach.

Damage symptoms are easily recognizable by the «shot-hole» pattern on leaves, where adults have chewed through the leaf blades. Heavy infestations result in severe defoliation, which hampers the plant's ability to photosynthesize. Furthermore, larval root damage can stress the plant, making it more vulnerable to soil-borne pathogens and moisture deficiency.
