Sap beetle

Beetles of the genus Nitidula belong to the family Nitidulidae, commonly known as sap beetles within the order Coleoptera. These insects are frequently associated with decaying organic matter, including fermenting plant materials or dry food products. While many species act as decomposers, some can become problematic pests in agricultural and horticultural settings.

This pest primarily infests weakened plants, fruits with compromised skin, or stored agricultural products left in fields. They are particularly destructive to berry crops, orchard fruits, and grain stores, where their feeding activity creates entry points for moisture and pathogens, leading to rapid decay and loss of commercial value.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs in suitable organic substrates that provide nourishment for the emerging larvae. The larvae are highly active and feed aggressively before pupating in the soil or within the substrate material, completing their development within several weeks depending on environmental conditions.

Damage is characterized by the consumption of fruit flesh, which introduces secondary infections such as molds and bacteria. The economic impact is most severe during warm and humid weather, which accelerates the beetle's reproductive rate, resulting in substantial yield losses during harvest and subsequent storage stages.

Management and protection strategies include:

• Maintaining strict field sanitation by removing damaged or rotting plant materials.
• Harvesting crops promptly to avoid over-ripeness and exposure to pests.
• Utilizing pheromone or food-based traps to monitor population levels.
• Applying targeted insecticides during peak flight periods in cases of high infestation.
• Deep cultivation of soil to disrupt the pupation environment of the beetle.
