Nomia bee

The genus Nomia belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Halictidae. Commonly known as alkali bees or ground-nesting bees, they are primarily recognized for their exceptional pollination services. However, in specific agricultural systems, their soil-nesting habits can occasionally cause logistical challenges for crop production.

These insects are not direct feeders on plant tissues, meaning they do not consume leaves or fruits. Their status as a nuisance pest is purely mechanical. When populations become dense, the extensive network of tunnels built by these bees can negatively affect the development of root systems in sensitive young crops or nursery stock.

Regarding their biological development, Nomia bees exhibit a univoltine life cycle in many regions. Females dig burrows in the soil, favoring dry and compacted surfaces exposed to sunlight. They provision cells with a mixture of pollen and nectar, where the larvae mature. The adult bees emerge in the spring to start the cycle anew, relying on nearby floral sources.

The harmfulness to crops is mainly manifested through soil disturbance. Excessive tunneling can compromise the soil structure, leading to root desiccation or instability of the plants. In cases where the crop is in its early stages of growth, this disturbance might provide an entry point for root pathogens, leading to secondary infections and reduced yield vigor.

Management strategies should be non-destructive whenever possible, considering their role in biodiversity and pollination. Recommended practices include:

• Applying thick mulch to inhibit ground nesting.
• Increasing soil moisture levels via irrigation during the nest-building season.
• Using row covers or agrotextiles during the initial stages of seedling establishment.
• Practicing crop rotation to avoid attracting bees to the same area repeatedly.
