The Nomia melanderi, widely known as the alkali bee, is an essential insect in North American agriculture. While primarily recognized for its high efficiency in pollinating legumes, its presence in large numbers can occasionally conflict with intensive soil cultivation practices.
Systematically, this species belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Halictidae. These bees are solitary or semi-social ground-nesters, and their specific biological requirement for alkaline, saline soils gives them their common name and dictates their habitat distribution.
They are specialized pollinators, primarily associated with alfalfa crops. Their role is so significant that farmers often manage their nesting sites (alkali bee beds) to ensure stable crop yields. However, excessive nesting density can lead to soil instability, which is a concern for machine-based field preparation.
The life cycle begins in early summer when adults emerge from the soil. The females construct individual underground brood cells, lining them with a waterproof secretion. The larvae feed on a pollen-nectar mix stored by the mother and complete their development underground before overwintering in a prepupal stage.
