Description

The sloe hairstreak (Nordmannia acaciae) is a species of butterfly belonging to the Lycaenidae family within the Lepidoptera order. While often observed in forest edges and meadows, it can emerge as a minor but persistent pest in fruit orchards, especially where its host plants are present in large numbers.

This pest primarily targets woody plants from the Rosaceae family. Its diet is largely focused on various Prunus species, including blackthorn (sloe), plum, apricot, and almond. Occasional infestations on hawthorn species have also been documented, making these trees potential reservoirs for the pest population in agricultural landscapes.

The butterfly follows a univoltine lifecycle, meaning it completes one generation per year. The winter is passed in the egg stage, with eggs typically laid on the twigs of host plants. Larvae hatch in early spring when buds begin to swell, feeding aggressively on developing foliage and emerging floral parts before pupating in protected areas on the bark or leaf litter.

The damage caused by the sloe hairstreak larvae includes skeletonizing leaves and consuming flower buds or young fruits. Severe infestations can lead to significant foliage loss, which weakens the trees and increases their vulnerability to diseases and subsequent drought stress, ultimately impacting the harvest quality and total yield.

Effective management strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. This includes proper orchard sanitation, such as removing infested plant debris and maintaining healthy tree vigor. If populations exceed economic thresholds, targeted applications of insecticides during the early larval development stage are recommended, along with the use of pheromone traps for monitoring flight activity.
